That Attitude Book
"Education is not filling a bucket, but lighting a fire."
William Butler Yeats (1865 - 1939)
In 1996 I wrote a booklet Improving Self-Image & Developing Positive Attitudes, aimed at students of all ages. The content was a distillation of personal experience and 16 years research, since the premature death of my father in 1980.
Despite submitting the booklet to scores of publishers and receiving many positive comments, none would publish it; even with endorsements from Dame Judi Dench and the late Sir John Harvey-Jones, on the back page. It was "too short" and concepts like "accelerated learning" and "emotional intelligence" were "ahead of their time in the UK".
In December 2003, after reducing the booklet's size to a 'pocket book', updating the content and adding new full-colour illustrations, I founded Inner Direction to self-publish it as That Attitude Book.
Divided into two parts, the book first explores why negativity is prevalent in western society, before examining what it takes to remain positive despite it all. Like the original booklet, it contains many quotations drawing on the ‘wisdom’ of centuries.
"You cannot teach a man anything. You can only help him to discover it within himself."
Galileo (1564 - 1642)
In keeping with Galileo’s message, the aim is not to ‘teach’, but to ask questions in the hope that you will want to 'discover’ much more.
